What really happened in the final episode of The Society?

The final episode saw Campbell, Harry and Lexie finally wrangle the town leadership from Allie.

And it ended in ritual humiliation for her as she and Will were paraded before their fellow teens while handcuffed to a radiator as the announcement was made.

Elsewhere Becca and her newborn baby both survived the birth.

The episode saw a flashback to West Ham with Allie’s mum reading an excerpt of Peter Pan that seemed to indicate the parents thought the kids had gone missing.

That along with a wall of their names under the words ‘We Remember Them,’ as well as the citizens of the town wearing yellow ribbons as a sign of hope all show how the parents are bewildered by the missing teens, but hopeful that they’ll return.

Bean suggested that because of the solar eclipse messing with the order of things, the Earth they were on wasn’t their own.

He said: “It’s like a parallel universe, almost exactly like ours but not quite.”

So Allie and the gang are trapped in one universe while their families exist in an alternate and correct reality.

We do know from the last episode that a lot of the weird happenings of the series can be attributed to the weird smell from the opening of the series.

And there is the suggestion that because the town refused to cough up the demanded $1.5 million to clear the smell, the kids were transported to New Ham as punishment.

But this all just remains speculation at this stage as nothing was answered concretely.

Will there be another series of The Society?

Since the first series only just dropped, we haven’t heard any announcements re a potential second.

However, the fact that the first series ended with so many unanswered questions makes it reasonable to think that we can expect a second to answer those.

Although bear in mind the other Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet also ended with a host of question marks.

So we can’t rest assured that cliffhangers equals a sequel.

However it has been a hit with both critics and teenage fans alike which means it is possible that producers will listen to demand.

What are the reviews for The Society?

TVGuide describes The Society as a bit like The 100 meets The Leftovers, with a bit of Under the Dome thrown in for good measure.

And it praises the show for not focusing attention on what actually caused these teenagers to be in the position they’re in.

It’s never questioned throughout the 10 episodes, instead Netflix allows viewers to make up their own theories.

The website shares: “By focusing in on these questions, The Society establishes itself as a fitting show for these times, tapping into the current concerns of the younger generation regarding the corrupt, unstable world their parents left them to pick up the pieces of”.

However, TVGuide does have one gripe: “The recurring butchering of how the game “F—, Marry, Kill” is played is inexplicable and oddly frustrating”.

Overall TVGuide recommends the series to anybody that likes watching a teen drama and can handle the silliness that comes with it.

Forbes describes the first episode of the series as “typical Netflix”.

While the site claims that the show has a very strong concept in mind, it apparently feels too “standard for its own good”.

Forbes’ review claims The Society succeeds at meeting its purpose in every way but feels stale in storytelling.

But then again, it’s a teen drama.

Hollywood Reporter says the show isn’t always as fresh or fluid as it thinks it is, but has some big ideas and moves well.

According to Refinery 29 a scene involving bad boy Campbell, his new love interest Elle, and a bathtub will likely go down as one of the most haunting images on Netflix this year.

What is The Society about?

The Society sees a group of teenagers returning from a trip, only to quickly realise that their Connecticut town has been abandoned.

Everybody from parents, siblings and the town’s various citizens are gone – and it’s now their mission to make sense of the ordeal.

Even pets are missing!

You’d think most teens would revel in the lack of adults, and they do rush in to partying and sex, but soon discover they cannot leave their location – scary!

The group has to figure out how they will survive before they end up destroying each other.

The Society has been compared to shows such as The 100 and The Leftovers plus Lord of the Flies, with a strong focus on all things dystopian mixed with political drama.

Interestingly enough, the ten-part series becomes a puzzle as it never mentions what actually caused the disappearance of an entire town to begin with.

Instead, the teens are forced to rewrite history themselves. Given their situation, it’s life or death at this point.

Is there a trailer for The Society?

Yes, there is a trailer – and you can watch it at the top of this article.

In the first glimpse given of the series a teen is seen phoning her mum, signing off “if you hear this, please come find us”.

Her obvious fear makes you want to dive right in and find out what’s caused her distress.

Even the minute-long trailer will send shivers up your spine as chaos ensues in the formerly peaceful town.

The series stars a host of rising actors including Big Little Lies’ Kathryn Newton, Blockers’ Gideon Adlon and Legion’s Rachel Keller.

The teen horror series came to Netflix UK on May 10.

Season one consisted of ten episodes in total.

And Netflix described it as “a modern take on Lord of the Flies.”
