Nemanja Matic makes Man Utd transfer declaration amid uncertainty over his future

Nemanja Matic has revealed he wasn’t ready to become a Manchester United outcast – and is happy at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old midfielder is out of contract in the summer and so far hasn’t struck a deal to stay.

But the experienced Serbian star has become an important figure in recent weeks with Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay injured – and the stats prove it.

After being scapegoated for United’s erratic early season form, Matic – who cost £40million from Chelsea in 2017 – then picked up an injury which sidelined him for two months.

But since returning in December United have kept eight clean sheets in the 14 games he’s played.

“That’s football! I’m now fit, happy and playing. Everything is okay at the moment,” he said.

“I knew that in football things can turn. I didn’t know when my time was going to come but I knew I would have some chance to play and my job is to give my best.

“That is exactly what I am doing and even if you don’t play you always need to be focused.

“Even when you’re younger, you need to realise your time can come and when you get the chance, you have to use it. It is exactly the same for me. It’s the same for players at every age.

“Of course, it’s much easier when you play all the time. When you are in good form, it is easier, you have more confidence, you are used to playing games every week or every three or four days.

“But when you don’t always play, maybe once in a month, it’s much harder.”

With McTominay fit again and expected to play a role against Watford today, Matic may be squeezed out – but he’s not worried.

He added: “Scott is a great player. There is always space in the team for good players. Managers have to decide who is going to play, how we are going to play.

“I am not worried, I am happy when he is in the team because he is the kind of player I like. I like to train with them.

“As a person, he is very good. I am happy he is back and hope he will avoid injuries in the future. The team is a question for the coach!”
