Its 318 stores and concessions will stay open and there will be no redundancies while it looks for a buyer.

But a question mark hangs over its future as it becomes the latest high street big name to struggle for survival.

Chief executive Helen Connolly said: “This is not the outcome we had hoped for and we will work with the administrators to do all it possibly can to protect as many jobs as possible and secure its future.”

Bonmarché has been a feature on high streets for nearly 30 years.

Tough trading conditions have already brought down Toys R Us, Maplin and Poundworld.

Others such as Homebase, Mothercare, Carpetright and New Look have closed hundreds of shops.

However, some businesses are faring better, a Which? study has found. It says Hair and beauty salons, tattoo and piercing shops, and funeral directors are booming.
