Naxian on the Beach, Naxos – review

Brits have long been flocking to the Greek Cyclades – with Santorini, Ios, Paros and Mykonos being at the top of our hit lists.

But what about Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades ? For any beach lover, Naxos is a must visit for its miles of golden beaches descending into unbelievably clear, crystal blue waters.

Staying on the beach is non-negotiable, which is why Naxian on the Beach offers a luxe option for those who want to fall asleep to the sounds of waves lapping on the shore.

Located just 10 metres away from Plaka Beach, we recently became coverts to a new age beach hut where the only thing you’re getting up for is your morning swim across the road.

Where is it?

About a 20-minute drive from Naxos town, you’re far enough away from the crowds to feel like you’ve found your own secret hideaway. With direct access to Plaka Beach (it’s quite literally across the road), the beach gets busier as the sun gets warmer so we recommend going for an early morning dip before breakfast.

The hotel is located on the quieter southern beaches but, as Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, renting a car can be a good idea if you want to fully explore the rest of the island while there.

Style

Strolling up the flax-lined wooden walkway, it’s immediately clear how different Naxian on the Beach is to its sister property, Naxian Collection. With the sounds of the waves immediately behind you, this hotel has just 10 suites, each with a sea view.

Inside the suites, you’re immediately greeted with beach house vibes thanks to the muted, clay-like palette, wicker-lined mirrors and bamboo bedframe. Half of the suites come with an indoor Jacuzzi while the other half come with an outdoor Jacuzzi. The hanging chairs on the balcony under wooden pergolas are the ultimate place to sit with a good book while you bask in the glow of the sunset.

The on-site Tortuga Beach Bar & Restaurant is an ultra-luxe beach hut. Here, guests dine alfresco under the wooden structure with slits of sunlight peeking through the beams. It’s the ultimate in beach chic.

Food & Drink

One of the best beach bars on the island, Tortuga Beach Bar & Restaurant stocks 120 varieties of Greek wine, so it will be a race to see how many you can sample while there. While the all-day restaurant serves light meals until 10pm – with room service and beach service available – it’s breakfast here that truly shines.

Think home-baked pies and breads with fresh fruit and just-squeezed orange juice. The Greek yoghurt, served with a vat of Greek honey to pour over it, is a must.

Which room?

While all of the rooms overlook the azure waters and the swaying grass, opt for one with an outdoor Jacuzzi to soak up the luxury.

Best for

Couples who want to have a seriously relaxing beach break and take life more slowly, even just for a few days.
