Nathan Buckley reveals the shocking amount an 'average' AFL player earns in a year

He’s reportedly commanded a huge $300,000 fee for his appearance on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

But that pales in comparison to the ‘average’ annual wage of an AFL player, according to Nathan Buckley.

The Collingwood legend stunned country music singer Brooke McClymont when he told her ‘the average wage across the whole competition’ was a staggering $400,000.

‘Holy hell!’ exclaimed the 40-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist when Nathan revealed the amount.

‘It just blew my mind how much money there is in football!’ she later admitted in a confessional.

Nathan then revealed the impressive starting wage for the athletes, saying ‘when you put your foot in the door, you’re on between 100 (thousand) and 150 (thousand) straight up’.

The disclosure comes after Beau Ryan shed light on his rumoured pay dispute with former Aussie Rules footballer Buckley.

The former NRL player-turned-TV host, who abruptly left I’m A Celebrity during Thursday night’s episode after admitting he missed his family, confirmed to 2DayFM’s The Morning Crew on Friday that there was a pay difference, but no feud.

Morning Crew co-host Erin Molan asked Ryan, 36, what he was paid to appear on the show.

‘I got paid just a little bit less than Bucks (Nathan Buckley),’ he responded.

‘So you were angry about that?’ said co-host and comedian Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes. ‘Are you genuinely angry you got paid less than AFL star Nathan Buckley?’

Ryan dismissed claims there was an argument between the two footballers but told the three radio hosts he was unable to refute the pay dispute rumours circulating in the media in December as it verified that he was on the show.

‘The only currency I’m worried about in there is food,’ he said. ‘No one is talking about money whatsoever.’

Beau abruptly quit I’m a Celeb during a late-night discussion with his campmates on Thursday, saying he missed his family and needed to leave.

He said: ‘As you know the last couple of days I’ve been struggling, and today I was a bit broken. It’s been really hard for me. The reason I did this show is to test myself, which I have. I’ve shown Australia the good, bad and ugly of me.

‘I’ve had some moments where I regret, some moments I don’t and I’m proud of everything that’s happened.

He said he ‘can’t explain’ how it feels to have met such a wonderful group of people, but needed to be with his wife Kara and their children, Remi, eight, and Jesse, three.

‘I remember growing up and a guy two houses down from me – the dad was always away for work. I don’t want to be that dad,’ he added.

‘My kids need their dad. My wife needs a husband, and I need to find myself back. I came in here to prove myself. I can’t gain anything else from this show. My journey here is over, and I love you guys.’

He then uttered the famous words: ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here.’

Several viewers supported his decision to prioritise his family, but others were shocked and disappointed by his exit.
