The PDC World Championship is still three months away, but bets are already pouring in on who will lift the Sid Waddell on New Year’s Day at Alexandra Palace.

Unsurprisingly, the defending champion and world number one, Michael van Gerwen has attracted the most bets for the 2020 World Championship, but there are some slightly surprising names just behind him.

UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall is the next most popular bet for the Worlds, with punters clearly seeing a lot of value in the 28/1 price he is available at.

Less surprising are former PDC world champions Gary Anderson and Rob Cross, who follow the Asp, while plenty of darts fans reckon BDO world champ Glen Durrant can make the ultimate impact on his Ally Pally debut.

Below are the top 20 most popular picks for the 2020 World Championships with Ladbrokes, with a few long shots in there attracting some custom.

‘13% of all bets so far have been on MVG, which suggests we’re in for the closest World Championship in a long time!’ Ladbrokes spokesperson Alex Apati told Metro.co.uk.

‘Usually MVG dominates these popularity charts at around the 25-30% mark but it’s much more evenly spread this year.’

Mighty Mike won his third world title in dominant fashion last time out, but he has never been able to defend the biggest prize in the sport.

The Dutchman triumphed at Ally Pally 2014, ’17 and ’19 and is looking to win back-to-back world crowns for the first time in 2020.

Aspinall proved on his World Championship debut last year that he is made for the big stage as he produced a superb run to the semi-finals, beating Gerwyn Price, Kyle Anderson, Devon Petersen and Brendan Dolan en route.

Following that up with his shock UK Open victory in Minehead in March and the US Darts Masters title on his World Series debut in July, the Asp is a big game player and punters are treating him as such.
