The stellar recognition was expected to be unveiled early this morning by Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr as the band took the stage at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California.

Sir Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts called the gesture “a milestone in our long and eventful history”.

They added in a statement: “A huge thank you to everyone at Nasa for making it happen.”

The name Rolling Stones Rock will be added to working maps of Mars. Lori Glaze, director of Nasa’s Planetary Science Division, said: “The name Rolling Stones Rock is a perfect fit.
