Naga Munchetty questioned the safety advice the Metropolitan Police has issued in the wake of Sarah Everard’s killer Wayne Couzens receiving a full life sentence during an interview with the Minister of State for Crime and Policing Kit Malthouse. The BBC Breakfast presenter poked holes in the instructions women have been advised to follow if they’re stopped by a lone police officer.
Munchetty said: “Can I bring up the advice the Metropolitan Police has issued on this?
“‘If you have concerns an officer is a threat ask searching questions of the officer such as, where are your colleagues? Where have you come from? Why are you here? Why are you stopping and talking to me?’
“If it’s a person who’s intending to do wrong they can answer those questions quite easily, can’t they? So I don’t really see how that helps.
“‘Try to seek some independent verification of what they say, if they have a radio ask to hear the voice of the operator or speak to them to verify you’re with a general officer acting legitimately.’”
