'My mother-in-law accused me of having affair after overhearing innocent remark'

A woman was accused of having an affair and labelled a ‘cheating sl**’ by her furious mother-in-law after she overheard a long-running joke.

The woman explains that she and her husband have a young son who was obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine – so much so that Edward, the name of his favourite train, was one of his first words.

The toddler spoke about Edward so much that it became a running joke between his parents that their son’s real dad was called Edward, who the mum was having an affair with.

She said her son is the spitting image of his dad so there could be absolutely no doubting he was the father, and one of the strongest bonds she has with her partner is their sense of humour.

One day the couple invited her husband’s parents over for lunch in the garden and as she was getting the food ready, she asked her husband to grab their son some juice from indoors.

The happy couple share the same sense of humour

Keeping the joke going, he threw his hands in the air and asked ‘Why can’t Edward do it!?’ before she replied: “Our son’s real dad isn’t here right now but God I wish he were, so you’ll just have to man up and do it.”

Unknown to the pair, her in-laws had arrived and were walking down the path when they heard the whole thing.

“Cue mother-in-law busting into the kitchen calling me a liar and a cheating s*** and asking how I could do this to them while father-in-law stood shocked and speechless,” she said.

“It took a good while to calm the situation and explain that, no, there is no Edward and yes, our son was in fact their grandchild.

“I kind of felt a little insulted that she’d actually believe it was true so quickly, but I guess that’s our own fault!”

The story, which was shared on Reddit, left others in stitches with one writing: “That is incredible.”

Another wrote: “That’s hilarious. People need to learn how to take a joke.”
