My 10 most anticipated PS5 games – Reader’s Feature

After my look back at the life of the PlayStation 4 I’d like to look ahead to the upcoming PlayStation 5 release. In particular, some of the features I am looking forward to experiencing along with some of the games I look forward to that are scheduled for release in 2021.

DualSense
Until I actually try the controller in action it’s hard to say whether or not haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers are worthy new features or just a gimmick, however from what I’ve read it seems to be getting a decent amount of praise. Even if you were to ignore the new features, from a design perspective it looks on the surface a definite improvement over the current DualShock 4 controller and more in keeping with the current Xbox design, which in my opinion is the better controller and feels more comfortable.

3D audio
For myself this is one of the most anticipated features of the new console. I’ve even ordered the Pulse 3D audio headphones. I didn’t really know much about it, but I listened to an example of 3D audio on YouTube and it blew me away. It’s crazy how much you can tell from which direction a sound came. I’m probably not explaining it very well. Check the link out yourselves instead. I guess only time will tell how effectively 3D audio is utilised but could be a potential game changer for first person shooter games.

Ray-tracing/4K
Again, I’m not massively tech savvy but from what I understand ray-tracing means more realistic shadows and lighting and essentially games will look prettier. I’ve also got a 4K TV so looking forward to experiencing games in 4K for the first time. I’ve watched a few gameplay videos in 4K but can’t say I’ve noticed a great improvement but maybe it’ll look different when I’ve actually got the PlayStation 5.

The launch titles
Sure, there’s not many true PlayStation 5 exclusives given that many are now available on PlayStation 4 but I’m still excited to try out Astro’s Playroom. Astro Bot: Rescue Mission is for me the best VR game yet and it’ll be interesting to see if it has the same impact without the VR element. I’m also looking forward to playing Miles Morales and, having ordered the Ultimate Edition, seeing what improvements have been made to the original game.

I’ve also got FIFA 21 and Dirt 5 to play, as well as Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition and Cyberpunk 2077 arriving in December. I feel slightly embarrassed at the amount I’ve spent (nearly 800 quid) but like many haven’t been on holiday due to COVID and also working in the NHS and in A&E work has been extra busy and stressful and to top it all off my brother died unexpectedly, leaving behind a girlfriend and two kids. So I’m justifying my ridiculous expenditure as me needing something to look forward to.

Top 10 games to look forward to in 2021
2021 is shaping up to be a busy year in terms of games. Hopefully we will get the Zelda: Breath Of The Wild sequel for the Switch. This list though is purely games I’m looking forward to on the PlayStation 5, but there might be some overlap between other consoles.

10. Horizon Forbidden West
As I previously mentioned, I really struggled to click with the first game but I’m going to have to give it another try because my god this game looks incredible, especially the open world environment. It really looks one gamers will want to explore.

9. Gotham Knights
This should be way higher on my list. I love the Arkham series but what I’ve seen so far hasn’t exactly blown me away and the lack of Batman has dampened my expectations. The Suicide Squad from Rocksteady looks even less promising. Still, maybe things will change.

8. Gran Turismo 7
Usually I prefer racing games that are more arcade-y and less so the serious ones. However, this might sound superficial, but this looks a real next gen title at least in terms of graphics. The kind of game to showcase the power of the new hardware.

7. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
I haven’t played a Lego game in a while but remember them as good fun. The latest instalment looks much of the same. I think it’s a game that I’ll get at some point but perhaps when cheaper. Also, it might be a good game on the move, so might get it for the Switch instead depending on the difference between versions. I’m slightly concerned about the length of the game. I tend to become disinterested after 20-30 hours with most games and hope it doesn’t try to cram too much in when covering all nine films.

6. Hogwarts Legacy
How has it been this long since a proper Harry Potter game? There must be many people, like myself that can’t wait to wave our wands about and show a Death Eater or two who’s boss (my that sounded filthy). Officially licensed games can be very much hit and miss, so I hope the game can do the world of Harry Potter justice. The first trailer looked promising. I also hope the recent J. K. Rowling controversy doesn’t overshadow the game. I’m sure lots of talented people worked on the game and it would be a shame if they were the ones punished.

5. Kena: Bridge Of Spirits
I don’t know a great deal about this game but remember being very much impressed by the trailer. Visually it looks a bit like an interactive Pixar film, it reminds me of Brave and seems quite unique in terms of other games out there at the moment.

4. Deathloop
Dishonored 2 is a game I really wanted to enjoy. Unfortunately, I gave up on it due to my lack of skill in games that require the player to be adept at stealth. I especially feel that first person games aren’t the best for this, as the reduced field of peripheral view makes it hard sometimes to see enemies that might be behind or at the side of you. Even though I didn’t enjoy the game I could see it was well made and seemed to have a unique style and some good ideas. Deathloop seems to be in the same vein but from the looks of the trailer more action-oriented and less focused on stealth. Also, it reminds me of the film Edge of Tomorrow/Live, Die, Repeat which I massively recommend to anyone who’s not seen it.

3. Far Cry 6
I’d never really played any Far Cry at any great length until Far Cry 5. It took me a little while to get to grip with things at first but when it clicked I really enjoyed it. I’ve previously mentioned I struggle with stealth but with Far Cry 5 I found it more accessible. I think it’s because rather than having to get in close with melee you could survey the scene from a distance and use longer range weaponry such as sniper rifles, silenced assault rifles, and crossbows. I know the game has recently been delayed from its intended February release date but I’m hoping that it will still come out in 2021 and that we might see some gameplay footage soon.

2. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
One of the few games on this list that is not only a PlayStation exclusive but also exclusive to the PlayStation 5. I really enjoyed Ratchet & Clank (2016) for the PlayStation 4 with its varied gameplay comprising of platforming, puzzle-solving, shooting, and also racing. The gameplay looks as fun as its predecessor and looks to utilise the fast-loading times of SSD to make switching between worlds seamless. I can’t quite believe this is coming out so soon after Spider-Man: Miles Morales, in addition to the remaster of the 2018 Spider-Man game. The guys at Insomniac must be working hard.

1. God Of War sequel
Surely it can’t be any other game, right? The 2018 God Of War was one of the standout games of the last generation. A technical and creative masterpiece it was also one of the games that pushed the limits of what the PlayStation 4 could achieve. This is why, without wanting to deprive PlayStation 4 owners, I hope this game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Hopefully, whatever format the game is on it will really showcase the next generation and wring every little bit of power from the PlayStation 5. Looking forward to finding more out about the game and hopefully seeing some footage.
