Your washing machine is the appliance that cleans your clothes. But do you know how clean the machine itself is?

Many of us do the semi-regular vinegar and water clean to keep things ticking, or use anti-limescale products if we live in hard water areas.

This tip, however, will show you just how dirty your machine can get, as well as getting it properly clean in the process.

As with many of the tips we publish, this one is courtesy of mums; specifically, the Mums Who Clean Facebook group.

The chatter on the group recently has been about how to get your washing machine clean, and a couple of ingenious members shared their top trick – dishwasher tablets.

From there, plenty more people in the group began trying it out, with absolutely amazing results.

To clean out your machine, simply add up to four dishwasher tablets to the drum of your machine, and put it on a normal hot wash (without any washing in it, of course).

The proof of how great it works is really in the water you’ll see as the cycle goes along.

One person who tried it out for themselves said: ‘Well to say I am disgusted is an understatement.’

This is because you’ll see – due to the fact dishwasher tablets are super effective at breaking down dirt – you should see the water turn brown in about five minutes.

Photos poured in from people who’d done the same, with one claiming that the dirt had shocked them as they’d done their vinegar clean not long ago.

One added: ‘I can already see the shine start to come back to the drum.’

You can actually buy washing machine cleaner from most supermarkets, but this is ideal if you’ve already got a dishwasher and don’t want to spend any extra cash.

The trend has carried on to the point of people emptying out their machine’s water into buckets to see the evidence.

Well, what use is cleaning if you can’t see that things were grimy in the first place? That’s half the fun.
