The department store has brought out a range of gym wear for girls aged two to 13 years, costing between £6 and £9.

The clothing made by brand Soulexe, and includes a Frozen-themed crop top, a purple hearts patterned crop top and trousers, as well as an ombre pair of leggings which has a matching adult size, costing £14.

Mums have taken to social media to question why Matalan is selling the revealing garments for young children.

Posting on Facebook, one mum fumed: “Today I opened an email from Matalan which had an empowering-sounding subject but actually promoted workout clothes for the ‘full family’, comprising women, men, and young girls.

“Young girls this age should be playing sports or engaging in active lifestyles, not joining in the January weight loss craze.”

Another wrote: “Why would a two-year-old need sport leggings
and crop top?

“Nothing wrong with promoting sports for kids per se but why no boys selection when you click on the sportswear title?

“Just brings up men/women’s/girls.”

This mum raged: “My views on four-year-olds needing skin tight, revealing workout clothes are a whole other rant!”

Another Facebook page said: “Past two years this seems to be a thing – not kids getting active in January, but specifically girls…

“Why are girls being included in the push for getting fit after Christmas (which retailers do every year) but not boys.”

Agreeing, this mum wrote: “This is an interesting one.

“Definitely odd that there are no boys included, but I can’t argue with the message that girls should be strong and active.

“I do resent that girls & women apparently have to wear Lycra to do so though!”

A spokeswoman for Matalan said the store catered for boys’ sportswear, as well as girls.

They said: “As a family retailer, Matalan offers a wide range of products for different age groups and uses.”

Meanwhile we revealed women are avoiding the gym as they look ‘red and sweaty’ when working out.

And this new mum has revealed how she shed five stone while still eating curries and pizza.

Plus we revealed these kids’ ‘fussy’ dinner habits were actually an eating disorder.
