After having the road-themed mat lying around for 25 years, she finally tackled the filthy rug after being stuck inside for nearly a week.

She popped the mat in the tub filled with water and let it soak, but was horrified with the result.

The bathwater turned a murky shade of brown, as the decades of ‘love and play’ were finally washed away.

The mum shared stomach-churning snaps of the mat to Facebook group Mums Who Clean, where it’s racked up dozens of likes.

“Day 6 and my house has never seen such love.

“Who knows might even scrub the walls and paint.

“Enjoy this soak photo. Washing out 25 years of love and play.”

After realising how filthy the mat was, she repeated the process and soaked it in the bath two more times.

The water got cleaner with each round of washing, and by the end the rug looked almost new with the colours brighter and sharper.

Numerous mums commented on the post, giving her tips on how to keep it spotless.

One said: “I have thrown these in the washing machine.”

While another parent added: “Fold it or roll it so the rubber backing doesn’t stick together!”
