Mum sparks debate as pal calls her 'manky' for not wearing panty liners everyday

A mum has left many people feeling baffled after sharing a comment her friend recently made about wearing panty liners.

In a post on Mumsnet, the unnamed woman claimed her pal had called her “manky” for not using the sanitary product every day.

And the whole thing has sparked an odd debate as people began sharing their own use of panty liners – with some suggesting that the friend must be “scared of her vagina” to wear them so frequently.

The original post read: “Tbh this is a complete new one for me. Was having a conversation with a friend yesterday who wears panty liners every day and has done since she was 15.

“I’d never heard of this before and told her so. She told me I was a ‘manky minge’ and that everybody wore them. Is this true? Thoughts please…”

Over 900 people have so far taken the time to reply to the mum and let her know whether it’s true or not.

Most were shocked and found the friend’s behaviour very unusual.

One person commented: “What?? Is she on any drugs?”

Another replied: “Waste of money, bad for the environment, why would you?”

A third wrote: “God, I can’t imagine being so scared of my vagina I’d need to wear panty liners every day.”

“Nope. I only wear them if I’m right at the end of my period and it doesn’t warrant using a tampon. Tell her to grow up, calling you manky lol,” said someone else.

However some people confessed they also wore them everyday.

“I always do I must admit. I don’t feel properly dressed otherwise,” a different user responded.

A second added: “I wear them but don’t expect everyone else to do the same. I don’t feel fresh without them.”

Someone else said their mother-in-law did the same: “MIL does and thinks it’s repellent that by the end of the day a woman’s pants might smell as though they’ve been worn.

“I think it’s madness.”

Panty liners sit in the gusset of underwear and are intended to keep the knickers fresh.

The sanitary brand Always says that they can be worn daily to give you that “morning-fresh underwear feel” by soaking up moisture from vaginal discharge.

However, womansworld.com claim that wearing a panty liner frequently could increase risk of getting a yeast infection.

So who is right here?

According to Dr Mayoni, doctor, pelvic floor expert, and owner of The Clinic, discharge is normal and some panty liners can cause problems.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, she explained: “Vaginal discharge is totally normal! It’s our vagina’s way of keeping healthy and clean, while allowing natural shedding of any dead cells/microbes. This will change through your cycle under the influence of different hormones. However, if your discharge is very offensive, smells or changes in colour from clear/white, then definitely see your doctor.

“Scented panty liners can upset natural flora and fauna. Perfume/cleansers can cause irritation to the delicate vulval and vaginal tissue – so I recommend using plain liners and changing them often.”

She advises those who want to wear them to make sure they change them regularly.
