The couple, from Sydney, were surprised at their baby’s weight, with the average Australian tot tipping the scales at 3.3kg (7.2lbs) while Remi weighed 5.88kg (12.9lbs) at 38 weeks and two days.

Meanwhile, the average weight for a newborn baby in the UK is 3.4kg (7.5lb) for a boy and 3.2kg (7.1lb) for a girl.

Emma told Illawarra Mercury: “She’s like a mini sumo wrestler. I did expect to have a larger baby as I had gestational diabetes but not this big.

“At 35 weeks an ultrasound revealed she was about 4kg but we didn’t think she’d grow that much more.”

The couple’s other children, two-year-old Willow and four-year-old son, Ace, were also larger than average babies, weighing 5.5kg and 3.8kg respectively.

Remi is part of just 1.2 per cent of Australian newborns weighing more than 4.5kg, with dad Daniel explaining fellow parents and midwives were shocked at their little girl’s weight.

“When I’ve walked around with her there’s always a crowd of people – midwives, other new parents and visitors – around her, asking about her size because she’s so much bigger than all the other newborns,” he said.

And the couple have been forced to buy heaps of new clothes for their arrival, with the baby outfits they had already purchased being too small.

Emma, who is recovering from an emergency cesarean due to her waters breaking early, says she “couldn’t have handled” a natural birth with Remi.

The mum-of-three has also been told she can’t lift anything weighing more than her 6kg daughter during her recovery.
