Mum reveals she was ‘C-section shamed’ by her midwife who claims she should have had a ‘proper birth’ at 32 weeks

A MOTHER has hit back at a midwife who ‘C-section shamed her’ and claimed she didn’t have a “proper birth” when she went into labour a month early.

Nama Winston was admitted to hospital when she just 32 weeks pregnant after doctors suspected her vomiting bug was listeria poisoning.

In a personal essay for Whimn, the mum – who was 32 at the time – recalled how she went into labour in the middle of the night.

She was then transferred to a nearby hospital with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and had been given an epidural for her C-section within 15 minutes of arriving.

Describing her conversation with her obstetrician (who she already knew from her IVF treatments), Nama wrote: “He explained his concerns for the situation and I accepted them. Of course I did.”

Determined to remain as calm as possible throughout the procedure, Nama added: “It went smoothly. Winston, my son, was shown to me briefly and then whisked away to the NICU as his lungs were not fully developed.

“I was whisked away to recovery and glad to have some time alone to process what had just b***** happened.”

As it had all happened so quickly, Nama didn’t have any of her family around her – but drifted off to sleep after being comforted by staff at the hospital.

When she woke up the next morning, Nama immediately noticed that the new midwife on duty was “different to the others” and “seemed almost angry” as she took her vitals.

Nama claims she said: “Why on earth did you have a C-section? I meam, you’d gone into labour.

“You could have pushed. You could have had a proper birth.”

When Nama tried to argue that her ill health could have put the baby at risk, the nurse shrugged and said: “Oh well, that was the doctor’s call, I guess. Doesn’t make sense to me.”

Before she stormed out of the room, the midwife added: “You won’t even breastfeed, will you?”

Unsurprisingly, Nama was devastated by the exchange and wrote: “What choice did I have anyway?

“Was she accusing me of making a wrong decision, when I had no idea what was happening to my body and my baby except that he was in danger?

It then that Nama recognised the midwife’s prejudice and how mothers who don’t have a vaginal delivery aren’t seen as “real mums”.

She concluded: “But she was wrong. I was a mother. Not only did I have the baby to prove it but I knew it in my heart.”
