A MUM has revealed her eight-month-old baby sleeps on a mattress to teach the young girl “independence.”
Mar Trujillo Gallardo, who posts on TikTok under @trujillomentalhealth, said she follows a style of child rearing called Montessori, which trains children to be self-sufficient.

She showed off her baby’s Montessori-style bedroom, including how her baby sleeps on a mattress on the floor.
Mar claimed there are numerous benefits to this sleeping set-up – but not everyone agreed.
The mum said the floor bed is cheaper, improves independence, increases mobility and that her baby can play independently in her room before alerting her parents that she is awake.
She added that this means the bed isn’t enclosed and her daughter can crawl around the room freely.

Many mums were quick to question if the sleeping set-up is safe.
One said: “I don’t think I’d be comfortable with my child crawling around unsupervised.”
Another added: “This practise is for toddlers not infants.”
IS IT SAFE TO LET YOUR BABY SLEEP THIS WAY?
Sun Doctor Carol Cooper told Fabulous: “There are pros and cons to having your baby sleep on a mattress on the floor.
“Perhaps the most obvious is that the floor and the rest of the room need to be clean and safe, because a baby will make the most of being able to get around.
“That requires excellent hygiene, and any loose furniture should be anchored to prevent accidents.
“Paediatricians recommend that the mattress itself should be a cot/crib mattress, not a regular adult mattress which is more likely trap air and potentially cause suffocation.
“Sleeping on the floor is strictly a solo arrangement for a tot. If you have twins or more, I wouldn’t do it all as accidents are far more likely. I speak from experience here!
“So, while it’s OK for your baby to sleep on a mattress on the floor, you need to take some precautions.
“Also bear in mind that you often have to go in at night and pick him up for feeds, your back could well protest.”

Mar insisted that the room is safe for her daughter, and everything is secured to the walls, as well as the toys being appropriate for her age.
She added that the parents also have a camera so they can see what goes on in the room.
The 100-year-old education system of Maria Montessori includes using mirrors during floor time to help tiny babies see themselves and discover more about the world around them.
