Mum makes her own toilet tissue for just £6 after not finding any at the supermarket

A mum who, like many of us, found no toilet roll at the supermarket decided to make her own.

The Australian mum had made four trips to the store but to no avail, as people are stockpiling the bathroom essentials during the coronavirus pandemic.

Posting on Facebook, she wrote she needed a solution as she lives in a house with all women (statistically women use the toilet more than men).

Her solution came from Australian hardware store Bunnings where she only spent $11.95 (£5.96) on a pack of 20 microfibre cloths.

She revealed that she cut them into 80 strips and left them to be used as toilet paper.

After use, they’re dumped into a bucket of bleach to clean.

While the solution is far from ideal, the mum said at least this method is reusable and more environmentally friendly.

It has also saved the household from wasting water while flushing (as there is no disposed tissue).

Would you try something like this?

On the now-viral Facebook post, she wrote: ‘I found my solution at Bunnings. I made 80 of these microfibre cloths.

‘After use, they go straight into a bucket of bleach with a lid on it, which sits beside the toilet.

‘The small bucket with the lid is also from Bunnings and cost $6.50 (£3.21).

‘Our household alone saves about 25 flushes per day, so I can justify a small load to wash every couple of days.’

Initially, she had considered cutting up a towel into reusable toilet tissue but then realised microfibre is ‘softer for the feminine bits and dries quicker when washed’.

‘If we could all do this, it would reduce the need for toilet paper, save us all money in the long run and be better for the environment,’ she added.

Facebookers applauded the mum and also shared their own methods, including cloth nappies.

Australian supermarkets have said they won’t be running out of loo roll altogether but warned customers that they do fly off the shelves fast.
