Mum left baffled after mother-in-law starts calling her granddaughter "her baby"

When a baby is on the way, it’s extremely natural for excited friends and family to get involved.

Depending on the parents’ circumstances, offers of help and support can be extremely welcome – but some relatives are guilty of taking it too far.

One mother-in-law left the expectant parents reeling after becoming far too involved in their pregnancy.

The mum-to-be posted about the tricky situation on Reddit where she asked for advice.

In the post, she explained that her relative used to be “easy to get along with” but has “snapped” since learning about the pregnancy.

“We let her get out all of her excitement, but didn’t really encourage it,” she wrote, “She keeps doing this weird thing where she refers to the baby as ‘her’ baby.”

And now it’s got even worse – as the grandmother recently demanded a list of possible baby names to look through.

“I asked her why that was necessary, and she said ‘Oh, you know! Just making sure we’re on the same page,’ wrote the woman

“I asked for clarification on that, why we’d need to be on the same page, and she started getting a bit cagey about it. Oh, you know. Just one of those things. Gotta make sure everyone’s on board with the name.”

“At that point, I cleared my throat and said, very kindly but firmly, ‘There’s no reason for anyone else to be ‘onboard’ with the names we’ve chosen.'”

Sadly, the mother-in-law didn’t take this well, as she blasted: “Well it’s my grandchild! My baby!

At this point, the Reddit user set the record straight, as she responded: “I said “No, she’s not your baby. Grandchild, yes. But… you don’t think you get ‘a say’ in anything involving her, do you?

“Like… you don’t think you get any say in her name, how she’s raised, what schools she goes to, how she dresses, any of it, right? You know you’re not the parent here, right?”

The grandmother didn’t like this and called her “ungrateful” and posted on Facebook accusing the couple of “keeping her baby away.”

Asking for help, the mum-to-be added: “I’ve had so much pushback from family telling us we need to just get over it and learn to accept that grandma’s going to be around and that yeah, maybe she should get a say in some things, after all, it’s her grandchild.”

Unsurprisingly, people thought the mum-in-law was acting unreasonably.

One wrote: “It’s your kid. Good for you & husband for standing up for yourselves.”
