M&S slammed for changing Percy Pig recipe to keep vegetarians happy

ANGRY shoppers are furious that Marks & Spencer has changed the recipe of its beloved Percy Pigs – to make them all vegetarian.

Foodies have started a campaign to “bring back Percy” after the chain decided to remove all traces of animal from the sweets.

M&S has always sold vegan Percy Pigs, but also made gelatin-filled versions for those who eat meat.

But people say the new range is “inedible” and are calling on bosses to bring back the old version.

Fan Richard Brackstone posted online: “Bring Back Percy!. Save Percy Pig!

“What do want? – Original Percy! When do we want him? – Now!”

Mr Brackstone isn’t the only eagle-eyed shopper to lament the change.

Laura Louse Knowles wrote a tongue-in-cheek letter to M&S on Facebook, saying: “They are NOT THE SAME!!! Not even nearly. Even my five-year-old was not fooled.

“Please, in the interest of the British nation… I beg you #BRINGBACKPERCY.”

Elizabeth Simpson added: “They have an awful texture and a chemical aftertaste.

“Very disappointed that Marks & Spencer have ruined a legendary and much loved sweet.”

‘MY LIFE IS RUINED’

Ria wrote on Twitter: “Percy Pig have changed their recipe to suit vegetarians. They now taste like a***.

“My life is ruined. The most sacred confectionery item on the planet is over. I’m in tears.”

Anne Mroz bluntly wrote: “Percy Pigs now taste disgusting. What have you done to them?”

But some people were pleased with the change.

Eli Cockayne said: “Well done M&s for this change!! Helping the planet one little ingredient at a time.”

Percy Pigs first appeared in M&S stores in 1992.

The treats have developed a cult-like status amongst consumers – a Percy Pig appreciation society has been set up on Facebook and currently has 250,000 members.

They were famously also placed at number 11 on Vogue’s hot list of 40 trends and people to watch in 2008.

Percy’s success has seen him in recent years acquire a wife, Penny, along with small piglet babies and “pals” including gummy sheeps and cows.

A M&S spokesman said: “After a lot of hard work (and tasting) we’ve finally perfected a 100% vegetarian Percy – something our customers have been asking us for, for a while!

“Rest assured we’ve tested the new recipe thoroughly to make sure he’s as close to the original as possible and we have haven’t changed any of the really important things that people love about Percy; the flavour is the same, he still has real fruit juice and never has artificial colours or flavours.”
