The Netflix film premiered on the streaming service earlier this month
Mötley Crüe have enjoyed a huge spike in both streams and record sales from across their back catalogue following the release of biopic The Dirt.
The film, which stars Douglas Booth, Colson Baker (AKA Machine Gun Kelly), Daniel Webber and Iwan Rheon as the members of the glam metal band, was released on Netflix on March 22, and is based on Neil Strauss’ biography The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band.
Despite receiving a slew of negative critical reviews before its release, The Dirt has actually invigorated Mötley Crüe’s streaming figures and recent sales performance since its release.
An official press release issued today (March 29) claims that combined streams of the band’s back catalogue and The Dirt soundtrack have seen a 570% increase on Spotify and a 900% increase on Apple Music – while Apple iTunes downloads have grown by 2027%.
The release also points towards the movie’s 85% audience score over on Rotten Tomatoes, which is in stark contrast to its 42% accumulation of scores from movie critics.
In an interview published this week, Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx discussed the band’s past behaviour in the context of the #MeToo movement – saying that he and his bandmates “don’t have anything to worry about.”
“Here’s the thing: if anybody was abusing power, that’s one thing,” he said. “But it was a time when everyone was living a life that is very different from today’s. That was then and this is now.”
