IT’S hardly surprising that cultural moments can impact baby name trends – and if 2020 is anything to go by, we might just come across a few little girls called Corona in years to come. No, seriously.
American website The Bump has revealed their “most searched” baby names of 2020 so far – and the coronavirus crisis has unsurprisingly had an impact.
Astrological-inspired names remain a huge trend for 2020 – with Aurora and Nova both appearing in the top 10 of most searched girls names.
But creeping in at 100th place is the name Corona – no doubt inspired by the global lockdown.
Meanwhile, the names Braxton, Hunter and Zion topped the popular boys category.
What’s more, Reese and Skyla were two popular unisex names which appeared on both the lists.

Earlier this year, American website Nameberry revealed Luna and Milo were the two most popular baby names of 2020 so far – while Cora had disappeared from the list entirely.
While Corona is likely to have appeared on The Bump’s list because it’s a popular search engine term, Nameberry claimed: “[Cora] is too reminiscent of coronavirus so its popularity is waning.”
That said, astrological-inspired names have come back in a big way for 2020 – with both Luna and Aurora remaining in the top three.
However, the parenting site reckons that Luna is popular not only because of its mythological heritage (Luna being the Roman goddess of the moon) but because John Legend and Chrissy Teigen chose it for their daughter.
