There is both a meat eaters and vegetarian option – the meat option will contain some fresh meat, and the vegetarian one will include meat-free sausages or mince.

The boxes will also contain toilet roll.

Staff will be able to order and pay for the boxes on a dedicated website which has been shared with their hospital, then pick up their goods from a special site in the car parks where they work.

The website can only be used to order these boxes, and staff will need to show their NHS identification when they pick them up.

Morrisons plans to roll the scheme out to hospitals across the country, delivering the boxes to workers on Mondays and Thursdays.

There will be two pick-up times, between 6-8am for people on night shifts and 4-6pm for those on day shifts.

The supermarket is making its first drops at St James’s Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, both in Leeds, today.

It said it planned to offer the service to other hospitals “as soon as possible”.

Many NHS staff have complained that they can’t always get the groceries they need especially if more than one family member works in the NHS.

David Potts, chief executive of Morrisons, said: “At this important time, the National Health Service is supporting the whole country so we need to support them too.

“We will be taking this service to many more hospitals to help feed NHS staff as they face the challenges of treating people affected by the coronavirus pandemic.”

Morrisons recently launched a similar box of groceries for the general public, which cost £35.

These proved hugely popular and sold out repeatedly.

Morrisons said it was working on getting more boxes in stock.

“We are doing everything we can to increase capacity to ensure we can meet demand,” a spokesperson said.

Earlier today, the supermarket said it would be increasing staff bonuses from £350 to £1,050 to say thanks for people’s hard work during coronavirus.

It has also set aside £10m of groceries for food banks.
