'Monty Don should be the next James Bond!' The Last Leg presenter Adam Hills declares

Adam Hills was joking about his fantasy of becoming the new on BBC Radio 2 with Zoe Ball. As the conversation went on, the star came to the conclusion that was actually the best man for the job.

Speaking to Zoe about his new children’s book Rockstar Detectives, the pair got on to the subject of Adam’s recent MBE.

The Australian presenter received the award in the New Year Honours list for his services to Paralympic sport and disability awareness.

After Zoe congratulated The Last Leg presenter on his MBE, the comedian shared a surreal moment when he received his letter confirming the award.

He said: “So the weird thing is, they send you a letter about a month beforehand saying, ‘Do you accept and would you like to be put forward blah blah blah…’

“But the letter had on it stamped ‘On Her Majesty’s Service’ – and for a second I thought I might be the new James Bond.”

“So wonderful! I think you could carry it off,” Zoe joked. “Are you very good at running on the top of trains? Are you quite hard when it comes to action scenes, Adam?

Adam replied: “Do you know what, because of our prior conversation, I’m going, ‘forget me’… Monty Don! Monty Don is the new James Bond.”

Zoe agreed with Adam, quipping that James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli would be “making that call immediately”.

The pair chatted about a number of subjects, including Adam’s new book, his experience meeting the late singer Meat Loaf, and the return of The Last Leg.

The Last Leg began in 2012, running alongside the Summer Paralympics every night following the main coverage on Channel 4.

Adam Hills anchors the show, while comedians Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker also co-host.

The programme went on to receive such strong reviews during the games that it has since become a weekly staple on Channel 4, holding discussions of contemporary events, interviews with stars and comedy sketches.

At the end of his chat with Zoe, Adam quipped: “I’ll see you on Friday right after Monty Don!” while the gardening fan replied, “That’s right, just after Monty!”

Adam’s debut children’s book Rockstar Detectives, which features a young detective dream team who have to recover a priceless painting, is out on February 3, 2022.

Series 24 of The Last Leg will air on Friday at 10pm on Channel 4.

The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show airs on weekdays at 6:30am on BBC Radio 2.
