Mogul.gg, Melbourne Esports, and Gfinity Australia Announce New Tournaments


April has seen a number of tournament announcements out of Australia, some for the first time, others returning with a mission to scale up or extend the reach of their 2019 efforts.

Mogul.gg Hosts an Online Australian Apex Open

Online tournament hosting service mogul.gg is running the Australian Apex Open, a $35K AUD ($24.6K USD) Apex Legends competition running through April and May.

Mogul.gg is owned by Esports Mogul Database-Link-e1521645463907, an Australian company that has focused its efforts across the Asia Pacific region, and has received investment from Razer Database-Link-e1521645463907. This tournament is its first major effort to build a player base and gain exposure in its home market.

The tournament is running across weekly qualification windows where teams aim to earn points to top the ladder and qualify for a knockout series in the second half of May before a finals event on May 19.

Australian esports organization Athletico announced it was participating in the event as part of revealing it had added an Apex Legends team to its roster.

Mogul.gg also recently announced a partnership with Legacy Esports, the Australian team owned by Adelaide Crows Football Club, to participate in open online tournaments starting with Fortnite Database-Link-e1521645463907, offering Razer laptops as part of the prize package.

Melbourne Esports Open Returns in August

The return of the Melbourne Esports Open has been officially announced for August 2019, with an expansion of the event adding a further arena to offer an increased competitive and entertainment line up for the event. The inaugural event in 2018 saw over 12,000 esports fans attend the weekend of events.

The marquee events of the weekend in 2019 will be the League of Legends Database-Link-e1521645463907 OPL Split 2 Finals taking place in Rod Laver Arena (home of the Australian Open tennis finals) on August 31, followed by the Overwatch Database-Link-e1521645463907 Contenders Season 2 2019 Finals on Sept. 1.

Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite, and Pokémon tournaments have also been announced, as well as fan activations and hands-on gaming experiences for attendees.

The event is produced by ESL Database-Link-e1521645463907 and TEG Live, while the tournament features JB Hi-Fi, one of Australia’s biggest home entertainment retailers, as the presenting partner for the event for the second time.

Gfinity Australia Shifts Gears With Supercars Eseries Competition

A sim racing esports series has been announced for Australia, hosted by Gfinity Database-Link-e1521645463907 Australia in conjunction with Supercars, the Australian touring car championship. The Supercars Eseries is based on the iRacing sim racing platform.

The partnership with Gfinity Australia will see 12 teams compete over eight weeks starting in August, which will run in line with the tail end of the Supercars racing season.

Like other Gfinity Australia events, the competition will be preceded by an open qualifier tournament to give the sim racing community a chance to be picked up by the formal teams that will compete in the tournament.

Boost Mobile Racing, one of the official Supercars racing teams, has been announced as one of the Eseries race teams.

The competition will be broadcast on Twitch Database-Link-e1521645463907, supercars.com, and other Supercars and Gfinity Australia social channels.

In 2018 Gfinity Australia hosted two Elite Series multi-esport competitions, featuring CS:GO Database-Link-e1521645463907, Street Fighter V Database-Link-e1521645463907, and Rocket League Database-Link-e1521645463907. In 2019 no new Elite Series has been announced, but another Rocket League tournament is currently taking place.
