Modern Love is the new Amazon Prime series you’re going to fall in love with

If you’ve an avid New York Times reader, you’ll be familiar with the Modern Love column that documents personal essays about romance and relationships. But you no longer need to pay the sky-high subscription fee because these stories are being brought to life in an eight-part Amazon Prime dropping October 18th. What’s not to love?

Each episode will centre on one of Modern Love’s real-life stories published online from all-consuming love stories to couples who have fallen out of love. Out of 750 essays written since 2004, the directors had the tough job of choosing just eight stories. Among them is the brilliant story of a woman who unexpectedly gets pregnant and forges a relationship with her doorman starring Anne Hathaway… anything can happen, right?

“We know the ins and outs of romantic films so well. We’re almost ahead of them,” Hathaway told The Hollywood Reporter. this was a way to tell a genre of story that I love telling in a way that felt really fresh.”

Anne Hathaway is joined by an Oscar-winning cast including Tina Fey, Dev Patel and Julia Garner. If the cast alone isn’t luring you in (seriously?), then surely the message behind it will. While love is the focal point, it’s not necessarily the end result. The show focuses on the journey, the lessons you learn from love and more importantly, the lessons you learn about yourself. Anyone who has experienced heartbreak knows there’s a hell of a lot of them.

The Director, John Carney, describes the series as “exploring love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms” which is pretty refreshing considering the love we see in movies is largely fictitious. Real-life love is rarely cookie-cutter perfection.

It’s fair to say our Fridays and Saturday nights have been dominated with rom-coms recently and that’s only going to continue with the arrival of Modern Love… but this time round we can have faith in love restored to everyone!
