Mikel Arteta's position on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Arsenal contract situation

Mikel Arteta insists he has complete trust in the Arsenal board over the contract situation of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners captain scored his 16th and 17th Premier League goals of the season in the 3-2 win over Everton at the weekend.

Once more, operating from the left side with Eddie Nketiah in the central striking role, the 30-year-old showed his importance to the club.

Additionally, he also made clear how much he is embracing the new direction in which the club is heading under Arteta, working relentlessly both in attack and defence and leading by example.

Arsenal are keen to keep Aubameyang, but his contract situation – it expires in 2021 – leaves the club in a difficult predicament heading into the summer.

Contract negotiations were put on hold last Autumn when Unai Emery was in charge, but club chiefs are now increasing their push to tie the ex-Borussia Dortmund hitman down to a new deal.

“I completely trust them on that.”

Alexandre Lacazette also used the club’s pre-Olympiacos press conference to heap praise on his close pal, hailing the sacrifices Aubameyang has been making for the team, operating in a wide role.

“I think people should talk more about Auba and what he is doing in the game because he is more than a goalscorer,” said Lacazette.

“He is working a lot for the team defensively and making space for the other striker – Eddie [Nketiah] or me – and I think if we start to win more trophies, people will talk more about what he is doing for the team.

“He’s one of the best or maybe he’s been the best player this season for Arsenal. Obviously I hope he’s going to stay.”

Earlier this week, Gary Neville declared of the Gabonese: “He’s one of the best players we’ve got in the Premier League, but for some reason he doesn’t quite get the credit and the plaudits that others get.”
