Mike Greene "COMMITTED" to next General Election after Peterborough by-election defeat

The party finished runner-up to Labour candidate Lisa Forbes in the historic by-election, losing out on their first seat in Parliament by just over 600 votes. But Mr Greene, star of Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire, looks set to run again in the same city he was born and raised.

The party source said: “He is focused only on Peterborough. (He is) taking a rest but will develop the structures needed to win in the coming General Election.”

The structures could be the significant groundwork that party leader Nigel Farage claimed had a big grounding on the final result.

Despite a strong campaign that saw Brexit Party campaigners travel from all across the country to help spread the message in the Eastern City, the party leader claimed he always thought his party could come a “very good second”.

Although The Brexit Party failed to win the seat, they did cause headaches for the Conservatives who were third in the polling and over 2,500 votes behind the new party.

Speaking to Sky News after the results were announced, candidate Mike Greene said: “We were only 680 votes behind Labour, they’ve had decades of data. I used to run a data company, I know how important it is to direct you to where you need to go. We had nothing just four weeks ago, I only started four weeks ago.

“I had a great team behind me but we didn’t have the phone numbers they had, we didn’t have the voting history they had.”

Talking to Express.co.uk before the vote Mr Greene confirmed that the party was ready for a General Election, adding: “We’ve had 2,200 people apply to be Brexit Party candidates in the event of a General Election, we will have a representative for every constituency when we have an election.”

Winning candidate Lisa Forbes renounced that The Brexit Party had been “rejected”, claiming that the “politics of division will not win”.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain, Mr Farage said: “One of the difficulties is in by-elections you’re up against big, professional party machines, we’re very new, we started off with zero data. Labour had been knocking on doors here for months, years even, collecting households that are going to vote for them or might vote for them.”

The ground data is thought to be key to Labour’s victory which came as a huge shock. The Brexit Party were the bookies’ favourites heading into the contest after Nigel Farage’s new party secured a hefty win in the European elections in May.

Peterborough also backed Leave in the 2016 EU referendum, with 61 percent of the constituency opting to leave the European bloc.

On achieving victory, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn visited the city and set out his intention for a General Election.

Mr Corbyn said: “All the experts wrote Lisa Forbes off. All the experts wrote Labour off. Write Labour off at your peril.”

The by-election came after former MP Fiona Onasanya was booted to by her constituents in a historic recall petition after she was found guilty of perverting the course of justice in relation to a speeding offence.
