Mikael Silvestre believes Arsenal fans need to ‘look themselves in the mirror’ over their treatment of Arsene Wenger and says the legendary manager should return to the Emirates and join the club’s board.

Wenger was at Arsenal from 1996 to 2018 and became the longest-serving and most successful manager in the club’s history.

The Frenchman led Arsenal to three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, but his reign has been somewhat overshadowed by a difficult period towards the end of his time in charge in which many supporters turned against him.

Former Arsenal defender Silvestre has criticised Gunners fans over their treatment of Wenger, however, and says the club would benefit from him returning to north London and taking a position on the board.

‘The fans should look themselves in the mirror,’ Silvestre told bettingexpert.com.

‘We live in a society where we want change and we want things fast and I think he [Wenger] was still capable of maintaining Arsenal’s place in Europe and doing a job.

‘What is the most annoying is the way he left the club and he’s not involved anymore, whereas United have Sir Alex Ferguson as part of the board and he’s a key figure there.’

Asked whether Wenger could return to Arsenal as part of the board, Silvestre added: ‘I think that could be beneficial.

‘Especially right now when the board is rocky, you need a captain and not somebody active on a daily basis but a father figure and an example like him at this moment in time, right now it would be a good thing.

‘But of course Mikel Arteta deserves time. He needs the time and he deserves it because he’s won a trophy with the club.

‘Change for change doesn’t make sense. He was given the opportunity to sign the players he wanted and now he needs to be given the time to work with these guys and produce good football that Arsenal have been doing over the years.’

Arteta’s Arsenal have lost their first three Premier League games of the season and face Norwich City – also without a point – on Saturday.

Arsenal players Gabriel, Thomas Partey, Eddie Nketiah and Ben White are all back in training and available for this weekend’s fixture, although Emile Smith Rowe is a doubt because of illness.
