Michelle Keegan: Brassic star reveals why she chose first comedy role

Sky comedy series Brassic is just days away from its highly-anticipated premiere on Sky One on Thursday, August 22. The cast of Brassic boasts the likes of Joseph Gilgun and Damien Molony, two actors who are no strangers to hit comedy series, as well as former Coronation Street and soap star Michelle Keegan. While Brassic is worlds away from Keegan’s time on the Cobbles, the actress revealed she was “really excited” to venture into her first-ever comedy role.

Michelle Keegan stars in Brassic from the very first episode of the new Sky series.

In fact, her character Erin appears in every instalment of the new series.

Brassic is Keegan’s first foray into the genre and she revealed series writer Daniel Brocklehurst was the main reason why she ditched soap land for comedy craics.

“So I worked with Dan before, like four or five years ago and I’m a massive fan of Dan,” Keegan told Express.co.uk and other media at the Brassic premiere.

The actress continued: “When I got sent the script and knew he’d written it I knew it was going to be amazing,

“Also, with Joe’s influence as well, injecting a bit of genius in there – honestly it was amazing.

“I remember laughing out loud and halfway through the script it was something I wanted to be a part of straight away.

“I’d never done a comedy before either so for me it was a yes straight away.”

While the switch from drama to comedy may seem daunting to some, Keegan expressed now such nerves at the switch.

The Brassic star revealed: “I wasn’t (nervous), I was just really excited I think it’s such a unique script – I was just really happy to be a part of it.”

Keegan plays Erin throughout the series, the loving yet tired girlfriend to Dylan (played by Molony).

While Erin is eager for a life away from the petty crime her boyfriend and his best mate Vinnie (Gilgun) are involved in, Dylan fears leaving could be too much to handle for his partner in crime.

Speaking about Erin, Keegan said: “(She’s) definitely a positive role model.

“I think she plays an empowering role for women, especially for single mums as well.

“It’s put in a very positive light and I love the fact that she’s fiercely independent and she’s very fiery,

“But in Erin as well she’s really quite emotional and you see that as the series progresses and you see that side of her.”

Molony also weighed in on his character, explaining the dilemma Dylan finds himself in between Vinnie and Erin.

The Brassic star added: “So Dillon is torn between the characters and obviously he loves Erin and he loves Tyler (her son) very much.

“He wants Erin to succeed in her career and make her dreams come true but that involves leaving town and I suppose he’s the only one in the gang that really understands Vinnie’s bipolar disorder.

“(He’s) really worried as to how isolated Vinnie will be if Dillion leaves so there’s really that great tension for any actor to play that kind of part.”

Brassic begins on Sky One on Thursday, August 22 and every episode will be available to stream on NOW TV and Sky Q afterwards.
