Michael van Gerwen remains the bookmakers’ favourite to lift the Premier League title this season, despite failing to win either of his last two games and slipping to fourth in the table.

The first block of Premier League action came to a close on Friday, with the first five nights of action played over the week in Milton Keynes.

MVG won two and drew one of his first three games and looked in blistering form in the third of those matches as he beat Rob Cross 7-3 with an average over 107.

However, he followed that up with a shock 7-3 loss to James Wade and could only manage a draw with Nathan Aspinall on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Jonny Clayton tops the table on seven points and Dimitri van den Bergh and Aspinall are ahead of Van Gerwen on leg difference, level on six points.

‘You dream of having a start like this for a first attempt in such a big tournament, I’m one happy Welshman,’ said Clayton after beating Gary Anderson 7-4 on Friday.

Clayton may be topping the table, have the highest tournament average and banged in a 9-darter, but the bookies are still not convinced he will be crowned Premier League champion on 28 May.

As a five-time winner of the event Van Gerwen still gets the nod in the betting, with Peter Wright still ahead of Clayton according to the oddsmakers.

Snakebite picked up his second win of the competition against Cross on Friday, averaging 100.9 in an impressive display that puts him level with three men on six points in the table.

The league stage remains very congested after five matches, with Jose de Sousa in ninth just three points off Clayton at the top.

Glen Durrant is the only man to be left behind, with the defending champion struggling with his throw and showing little of the fantastic form he has shown over the last couple of years.

Duzza has lost all five of his matches so far and looks likely to suffer relegation on Judegment Night on 22 April.
