Michael Owen not happy with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Man Utd – ‘They can’t play like that’

Michael Owen does not think Manchester United can remain a counter-attacking team. United have won their last two Premier League games against the odds, beating Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham and local rivals Manchester City. Despite winning, United had less possession than their opponents in both of those matches and instead chose to play on the break, especially against City.

Owen can put up with United playing like that against top opposition but does not think that is the style they should adopt in every game.

The pundit was speaking at half time of United’s 4-0 Europa League win at home to AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.

AZ had more possession than United at the break with the score at 0-0.

“In 80 per cent of games, Manchester United surely should be in control of possession,” Owen said on BT Sport.

Owen’s former United team-mate Owen Hargreaves reckons United are attempting to play a more possession-based style of football.

However, Hargreaves says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are getting caught betwixt and between two styles.

“I think they’re working towards being that old United team where they can dominate possession,” he said.

“But to win games, you saw against Tottenham, against City, they’re best at the counter.

“[James] Garner gets another opportunity at that heart of that midfield and [Mason] Greenwood [up front].

“Obviously [Nemanja] Matic needs [game time], [Anthony] Martial gets to lead the line and Brandon Williams again at left-back.

“So an opportunity for these players to stake a claim.

“Jesse Lingard in the last round started, played in the hole and got himself back in the Premier League team.

“So it’s an opportunity to play and play well.”
