Michael Owen has backed Chelsea to beat Manchester United in what he believes will be a ‘tight, close affair’ at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer head into the much-anticipated Premier League clash desperate for all three points after a poor run of results for both clubs in recent weeks.

Chelsea will go five points clear of fifth-placed Sheffield United with a victory on Monday evening, while the Red Devils would leapfrog Tottenham into sixth with a win.

United thumped the Blues 4-0 at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season, but Owen believes the scoreline that day ‘flattered’ his former club.

And the ex-England striker has predicted a narrow victory for Chelsea, telling BetVictor: ‘Manchester United have failed to score in three successive league games for the first time since 2016 after their goalless draw with Wolves and I don’t think we will see many opportunities at Stamford Bridge in what is arguably the game of the weekend in the Premier League.

‘The last time Chelsea beat United was in the 2018 FA Cup Final and United have won on their last couple of visits to Stamford Bridge – in the FA Cup last season and the League Cup earlier in the current campaign.

‘Chelsea were thrashed 4-0 at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the season, but that scoreline clearly flattered the hosts with the Blues hitting the post twice in the first half.

‘I expect to see Chelsea take maximum points in a tight, close affair.’

Charlie Nicholas also expects Chelsea to boost their Champions League qualification hopes with a victory over their rivals.

‘We have another very intriguing match on the cards on Monday,’ the former Arsenal star told Sky Sports.

‘The race for the top four is fascinating. Can Chelsea make it? Again, they are a side who are quite awkward at home.

‘Tammy Abraham had a few niggles before the winter break, while Mason Mount was left out for the game against Arsenal and these things can start to take a strain.

‘Willian has been class but went cold for a few games, so the break may have come just at the right time for them so that they can get back to the basics.

‘Manchester United will have got some of their players fit during the break. They were excellent when they went to Manchester City twice, but they are showing no consistency.

‘This is why people are still backing, and hoping for, Mauricio Pochettino to come in.

‘I do think Chelsea will have enough, but they will need to focus on getting their style right and doing the basics effectively. Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United.’
