MICHAEL Gove has heaped praise on his potential leadership rival Boris Johnson – saying he’s got “flair, distinction and intellect”.

The environment boss said the Tory heavyweight was a great foreign secretary and they worked well together during their time in Government.

But he refused to say whether or not he would run against Boris to be PM.

Gove gushed about his former colleague this morning, but didn’t go as far as to back him to be the next leader of the Tories.

“My view is that Boris served as foreign secretary with distinction. I enjoyed working with him. I have huge admiration for him,” he told Radio 4.

“I think that at this point, the most important thing is that we recognise that there are a field of potential leaders, all of whom have something to offer.

“And Boris Johnson is a Conservative of flair, elan, distinction and intellect. I think Boris will make his case and it’s important that we give him the chance to make his case.”

Both men are expected to run again for the top job when Theresa May stands down – which could come in days.

However, in the 2016 leadership race, Gove, who was set to run on a joint ticket with Boris, abandoned him at the last minute and went alone.

Boris dropped out and Gove later didn’t get enough votes to go into the final showdown with Tory members.

A YouGov poll for The Times showed last week that among Tory members, Boris is the favourite with 39 per cent of the vote.

His nearest rival, Dominic Raab, was trailing behind on 13 per cent.

Labour members said this week he was the candidate they feared the most for Jeremy Corbyn to go up against in an election.

Today Mrs May’s position as PM hangs in the balance as her new Brexit deal flops with both her own party and Labour.
