Michael Barrymore thanked Phillip Schofield for his heartfelt message after he was forced to quit Dancing On Ice.

The TV presenter was set to make his TV return on this year’s series skating with professional ice skater Alex Murphy, but pulled out after breaking his wrist in training.

He appeared on Monday’s This Morning to talk about his early exit and what his plans are for the future.

Host Phillip said he was ‘heartbroken’ when he found out that Michael would be dropping out of the show. He also said on Sunday’s Dancing On Ice that the door is always open for him to return.

Phil told Michael: ‘When we got the call to say Michael’s out, we were both so broken-hearted, not just for the show but for you and Alex.’

The 67-year-old recalled the moment he realised he would have to drop out: ‘It came out of nowhere.

‘I went in there thinking I just had a really heavy sprain because it had all puffed up and then she went, “No you can’t skate on that”, and just in a second…in a heartbeat everything changes.’

Holly wondered whether the incident had made him ‘superstitious’ as it had happened on Friday the 13th.

Michael said: ‘I didn’t realise at the time. I am [superstitious] now!

‘I’m not doing anything on Friday 13th I don’t care what the job is, even if it’s meeting the Queen I’m gonna cancel.’

After hearing a supportive message from his former skating partner Alex Murphy, the Strike It Rich host got serious to tell Phil he appreciated his kind words.

He said: ‘Even last night, you know when you said you were heartbroken, some people say it and you go, “Oh it’s a bit theatrical”.

‘I didn’t feel that, I thought it was really genuine. So thank you for that.’

Despite being out for the count at the moment, Michael has every intention of competing next year.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
