Mewtwo, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle added to Pokémon Sword and Shield on Pokémon Day

Pokémon Sword and Shield is celebrating Pokémon Day with seven new additions of old school pokémon, including Bulbasaur and Blastoise.

Today is Pokémon Day, the anniversary of Pokémon Red and Green’s release in Japan, back in 1996. 24 isn’t a very significant birthday (next year should be fun though) but there’s still a bunch of additions being made to Pokémon Sword and Shield today, including lots of freebies.

The biggest news is that Mewtwo and Gen I starter pokémon Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle have started appearing in Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield.

Although Charmander was already in the game the others weren’t, so that means seven new pokémon if you count Bulbasaur and Squirtle’s extra evolutions.

There is a snag though, in that you won’t be able to catch Mewtwo, as he’s too powerful. That presumably means he won’t be properly logged in your pokédex, although it should at least register his existence.

But according to Serebii.net if you beat him you will get some high value rewards, with all the new additions dropping EV reducing berries, Toxic Orb, Flame Orb, and Life Orb. Mewtwo will also drop ability capsules and PP Max if you beat him.

Mewtwo will also be appearing in Pokémon Go (no doubt to also help promote Netflix movie Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution), and fellow mobile game Pokémon Masters will add Red and Charizard, from the original Game Boy games.

There’s a promotion on the Nintendo UK website where you get a choice of free mug if you buy anything Pokemon related today. One has a whole bunch of water pokemon on it and the other is all fire types.

Finally, if you want some free pokéballs and other items in Pokémon Sword and Shield here are few codes to enter into the Mystery Gift option on the main menu:
