Metals tycoon Gupta names new woman to run 12,000 acre farm estate

Indian industrialist Sanjeev Gupta, whose business empire includes the Lochaber aluminium smelter in Scotland, has appointed a 25-year-old woman to run his huge hill farming operation in the Highlands.

Chloe Malcolm will manage the Jahama Highland Estates farms, which stretch over 12,000 acres in the west Highlands and are home to over 600 sheep.

The estate surrounds the aluminium smelter and hydro-electric plant, which is operated by Gupta’s GFG Alliance.

Malcolm, part of the 16% of farm managers in Scotland who are female and just 4% who are under 35, was born and brought up on a Highland farm and also has experience in farming in Devon, Dumfries and on the Isle of Bute.

As well as rearing native sheep on the farm she will also look at the possibility of expanding into cattle and venison.

Julia Stoddart, chief operating officer, Jahama Highland Estates, said: “We’re delighted to have Chloe on board. She’ll bring energy and enthusiasm to our farming operation, which is of vital importance to the local economy and environment.”

Malcolm said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on this new challenge. Our goal is to produce good quality livestock as part of our sustainable Estate business – while taking good care of the landscape and of natural resources.”

GFG Alliance bought the aluminium smelter in Fort William from mining giant Rio Tinto in a £330m deal in 2016.

Its other interests in Scotland include bespoke bike manufacturer Shand of Livingston.
