Metallica forced to postpone Australia and New Zealand tour as frontman enters rehab

The band had been due to perform down under as part of its Worldwired tour. Gigs were scheduled to be played in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland next month. But in a heartbreaking turn, lead singer and co-founder of the group James Hetfield has re-entered rehab leaving the band with no option but to postpone.

The announcement was made by Hetfield’s bandmates Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo on Twitter.

They said: “As most of you probably know, our brother James has been struggling with addiction on and off for many years.

“He has now, unfortunately, had to re-enter a treatment program to work on his recovery again.

“We fully intend to make our way to your part of the world as soon as health and schedule permit.

“Once again, we are devastated that we have inconvenienced so many of you, especially our most loyal fans who often travel great distances to experience our shows.

“We appreciate your understanding and support for James and, as always, thank you for being a part of our Metallica family.”

According to the Daily Mail, Hetfield was back into rehab to treat his “addiction”.

Ticket holders have been told they are entitled to a full refund for their purchases.

It would have been the first time in half-a-decade that Metallica would have played in Australia.

Their Worldwired tour had already seen the group complete dates across the US and Europe.

NME reports that there is no indication what “addiction” he is being treated for.

Reports suggest that the 56-year-old singer had gone sober in 2002.

He abstained from alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs.

Fans were quick to wish Hetfield well on Twitter.

One said: “We love you Metallica. Take care of yourselves we can wait.”

Another added: “Some things in life are just more important, completely understand, good luck James!!”
