Met Gala Challenge: Billy Porter is encouraging you to recreate your favourite Met Gala looks in new Instagram challenge

The first Monday in May usually plays host to one of the fashion calendars’ glitziest nights, the annual Met Gala, which acts as a magnet for the most A-list of guest lists.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Gala has been postponed “indefinitely.” While fashion fans and the fashion fleet were no doubt left saddened by the news, one of the Gala’s regular – and most fabulous – attendees, Billy Porter, is challenging you to usher the glamour of the Met Gala into your own homes.

In the video shared on Instagram, the 50-year-old “Pose” actor wore a Matrix-esque look from New York-based brand The Blonds – who designed his “Sun God” look from last year’s event – to announce the challenge.

“The time has come for the challenge to end all fashion challenges,” Porter says in the video. “Pick an iconic Met Gala look from years past and recreate in your home.”

It really is that simple; to be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is re-create your favourite Met Gala look from over the years and post a photo of yourself, using the hashtag #MetGalaChallenge.

But where to start with the event’s archive of the most outré ensembles? Perhaps you’ll opt to channel Rihanna’s canary yellow Guo Pei masterpiece from 2015? Or maybe Lady Gaga’s four outfit changes at last year’s event is more up your street?

The #MetGalaChallenge begins today and runs until 3 May. To enter, post a photo of yourself in a red carpet look that you have recreated from a past Met Gala on Instagram, using the hashtag #MetGalaChallenge. Both Billy Porter and American Vogue will select winners of the challenge. Once they are chosen, they will be announced on 4 May in a post on Vogue.
