Mesut Ozil will earn £31MILLION from Arsenal even if he never plays again

MESUT OZIL’S determination to see out his contract despite falling out of favour at Arsenal will still see him earn a staggering £31MILLION…even if he never plays for the club again.

The midfielder is the higher earner at the Gunners after penning a £350,000-a-week deal under former manager Arsene Wenger in 2018.

The 31-year-old’s career in north London looked to be over under successor Unai Emery, with the Spaniard actively looking to offload him in January.

But Ozil has insisted that he will see out his Arsenal contract, which still has two years to run until the summer of 2021.

And that means that the Gunners will be shelling out another £350k a week to keep the German on their books for the 89 weeks until his deal expires.

That is a total of £31.15m for a player who has only featured in two of Arsenal’s 11 games this season and has been left out of the last three matchday squads entirely.

Ozil’s appearances this season have been limited to a start in the Premier League draw against Watford and the 5-0 Carabao Cup win at home to Nottingham Forest.

Despite that, the former Real Madrid midfielder has already banked £3.15m in wages since the start of the season.

The club’s head of football Raul Sanllehi has offered Ozil a shred of hope – but warned the German outcast he needs to “contribute 24/7” to the team.

You can go through difficult times, like this, but that is no reason to run away and I’m not going to. I’m here until at least 2021

The Gunners’ head of football believes the midfielder’s “qualities are without question” but admitted he must work harder.

It was earlier revealed by Sanllehi that Unai Emery will only pick players who work hard in training, with no other bias.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss was influential in Arsenal’s decision to withdraw a new hefty contract for Aaron Ramsey as he looks to trim the club’s extortionate wage bill.

But Ozil has now insisted he will be going nowhere and rejected accusations from people at the club that he uses his health as an excuse to miss matches.

He told The Athletic: “I have a contract until the summer of 2021 and I will be staying until then.

“When I signed the new deal, I thought about it very carefully and said it was one of the most important decisions of my footballing career. I didn’t want to stay for just one or two more years, I wanted to commit my future to Arsenal and the club wanted me to do the same.

“You can go through difficult times, like this, but that is no reason to run away and I’m not going to. I’m here until at least 2021.

“I also get really frustrated when I miss a game through illness and people question if it is genuine. Yes, it happened a few times – usually in the winter – but what am I supposed to do?

“If you knew me, you would know it takes a lot for me to miss a game and I have never used sickness as an excuse. Actually the opposite. I played many games when I was ill or had injuries.

“Most players don’t play when injured or sick – it influences your game, you can’t give everything – but I was always available unless it was impossible.”

Mesut Ozil’s Arsenal career is over after being left out of squad for three matches this season, says Ray Parlour
