Mesut Ozil says Arsenal are ‘on the right path’ after securing a thumping 4-0 victory over Newcastle on Sunday in which the German playmaker ended his long wait for a goal.

After a stale first half at the Emirates, the Gunners came out flying in the second half as quick-fire goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and record signing Nicolas Pepe put the hosts on their way.

Newcastle put up little resistance and in the final embers of the match the icing was put on the cake as both Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette – who had not scored since the start of December – netted.

Ozil’s own barren run in front of goal had gone on much longer, having failed to find the back of the net since scoring in a 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace in April of last year – almost nine months ago!

But he was thrilled to see Arsenal pick up a much-needed win, and get on the score sheet, and let Gunners fans know about it on social media afterwards.

Taking to Instagram, he posted a picture of his celebration against Newcastle and wrote: ‘Great team win for the Arsenal! We showed why we’re definitely on the right path #YaGunnersYa’

The post echoed comments Ozil made during Arsenal’s warm-weather training camp, when he said the whole team are enjoying their football again under Mikel Arteta compared to axed boss Unai Emery.

‘As a team, we are much happier and everyone wants to give everything for this club,’ he said last week. ‘Especially tactically we improve a lot and I hope in the future we will be more successful.’

Ozil’s goal against Newcastle, which was admittedly aided by a goalkeeping error, came after a string of 35 passes and head coach Arteta hopes to see more of that going forward.

Asked if Ozil’s goal summed up what he’s trying to build, the Spaniard replied: ‘It’s part of it. When everyone is involved in what we want to do and everybody is participating towards a goal, it’s very pleasing for me.

‘A lot of things we work on is to make sure everyone is relevant on the things we want to achieve. But if we can score in two [passes] it may be better.’
