Meghan Markle’s friend Misha Nonoo launches maternity line

When Meghan Markle made her first public outing with Prince Harry at the Invictus Games in 2017, she was wearing a shirt, somewhat prophetically named the Husband Shirt, from Misha Nonoo.

A close friend of Markle’s – rumoured to have introduced the young couple – New York-based British fashion designer Misha Nonoo has now taken her signature shirt as inspiration for a maternity collection.

Nonoo, whose line promotes a pared back, 8-piece capsule wardrobe of made-to-order minimal, monochrome separates, is focussed on ‘buy better, wear longer’ and therefore has created maternity styles intended to become wardrobe staples long after pregnancy.

Nonoo’s first foray into maternity clothing was inspired by her personal experience with pregnancy. “I wanted to translate everything I loved about my existing wardrobe into a few maternity-friendly pieces, making sure they could be worn after my pregnancy as well.

“Being a businesswoman and expecting mother, I didn’t want to compromise my personal style just because I’m having a baby. My brand philosophy has always been an edited and classic wardrobe, and what better way to demonstrate that than by creating a versatile maternity collection with pieces that can be dressed up and down, before and after baby.”

The collection consists of two designs, a shirt and a shirt dress, each of which come in white, blue and a black and white stripe.

To launch the collection, Nonoo partnered with New York-based maternity label Hatch, founded in 2011. “Hatch is a leader in beautiful maternity wear with longevity,” says Nonoo, “and like us, encourages their customers to see the full life span of clothing. Having Hatch to offer their expertise throughout the process allowed me to modify our iconic Husband Shirt into elegant and sustainable maternity pieces, whilst still complementing our signature look.”

For now, the maternity line is a temporary addition to the range, but might Nonoo add the styles to her permanent collection? “We never rule out anything for the future!”

The collection will be sold on MishaNonoo.com from January 30.
