Mediatonic opens new studio in Madrid

Mediatonic has announced it has expanded to a bigger studio in Madrid, Spain. The brand-new facility – which opened on July 2nd – joins existing locations in London, Brighton, and Guildford, and enables the Madrid team to grow from 20 employees to 70 by 2021.

The move coincides with the firm taking on its 200th employee, which Mediatonic hopes will “help further their ambition”. Recent hires including Failbetter Games’ marketing manager Haley Uyrus, business development director Josh Tarrant – formerly of Climax and Jagex – and producers Joe Best (Bossa Studios, Square Enix) and Anthony Kyne (EA). The team also weclomed new business development manager Mitsuo Hirakawa, who had formerly worked at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

“It was an amazing moment to celebrate the new studio in Madrid,” said Dave Bailey, co-founder of Mediatonic. “The local games community is incredibly engaged, with people travelling from right across Spain to take part and show their support. It was great to hear developers talking about important issues in the industry and share what they’ve learned and I hope this new space can contribute and encourage these kinds of positive conversations. Most of all, we got to play games together and enjoy the moment as we look to an exciting future growing in Spain.”

Mediatonic is one of the UK’s largest platform-agnostic independent developers. So far it has launched over 100 games “in partnership with some of the world’s largest and fastest growing game publishers”, and has games like Gears Pop! (Gears of War, Microsoft) and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout (Devolver Digital) currently in development.
