Mean Girls Day: what is it, when is it and what are the best movie quotes to celebrate?

You might not get the day off work to go shopping but you should definitely get your pinkest outfits out to celebrate because Mean Girls Day is right around the corner.

Not formally recognised as a national holiday (like, what is that all about?) Mean Girls day is a celebration of everyone’s favourite early naughties flim about innocent outsider Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) getting to grips with the wild and ruthless rules of being a teenager in American high school.

Born out of social media, movie fans have begun celebrating Mean Girls Day annually by watching the film, wearing pink and throwing huge events to mark the unofficial occasion.

In London, there are multiple events taking place on Mean Girls inspired by the movie, including a ‘So Fetch’ themed afternoon tea at Duo London, and cabaret at Mirth, Marvel and Maud in Walthamstow and a quiz based on the movie at the Cock Tavern in Fulham as well as numerous screenings of the film at cinemas across the country.

Outside of official screenings to mark Mean Girls day, fans continue to come up with multiple ingenious ways to celebrate the movie because, after all, the limit on how to honour Mean Girls DOES NOT EXIST. (Get it?)

When is Mean Girls Day?

Mean Girls Day is always celebrated on October 3rd because of the line in the 2004 film when character Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) asks Cady Heron what day it was. She answers: ‘October 3rd’ and thus, a new fandom celebration day was born.

Is there a sequel to Mean Girls?

True Mean Girls fans, look away now.

There was a stand-alone sequel to Mean Girls created in 2011 that premiered on ABC Family, but it was panned, receiving a Rotten Tomatoes score of 31 per cent and an IMDB rating of 4.1 stars out of 10.

If there will ever be a sequel penned by original writer Tina Fey however, is uncertain but should the opportunity come around, Lindsay Lohan has confirmed that she’s be on board.

The actor told Variety earlier this year: ‘If anyone has asked for this more than I have, please tell me!’

‘I’ve said it so many times, and so many people have asked me, and I think we’d have so much fun doing it.’
