McLeod's Daughters star Simmone Jade Mackinnon debuts new dreadlocks

McLeod’s Daughters star Simmone Jade Mackinnon debuts her dramatic new hairstyle – and reveals producers ‘would never let her have dreadlocks’

She played Stevie Hall in one of Australia’s most most popular and successful rural dramas, McLeod’s Daughters, from 2003 to 2009.

And since leaving the show, Simmone Jade Mackinnon has dramatically changed her look by styling her long hair in dreadlocks.

The actress-turned-jillaroo, 46, often shows off her hairstyle on Instagram, having decided to change things up after a road trip around Australia three years ago.

Speaking to Nine.com.au about her transformation, the mother-of-one said the hairstyle has now become ‘part of her’.

‘I’ve had them for so long and, I don’t know, just a freedom I feel by having them, I’m not attached to anything,’ Simmone added.

‘I don’t know if it was because I was told I wasn’t allowed to have them for so long, now I’m like, “Well, there you go, I’m having them now, no one can tell me what to do, this is the way I’m living my life”.’

However, she did acknowledge the dreadlocks – and living far from the city – makes it more difficult to be cast in television shows.

Simmone had previously tried out the look in the early 2000s, around the time she finished a 24-episode run of U.S. series Baywatch.

When she was cast in McLeod’s Daughters in 2003, she tried to convince writer Posie Graeme-Evans to let her character have dreadlocks, but received a firm ‘no’.

‘I was like, “Look, this character, it would make sense, wouldn’t she have these wicked dreadlocks?”,’ she recalled of the conversation.

In October, it was announced McLeod’s Daughters would be coming back for a special one-night-only live event.

The ‘McLeod’s Daughters Bush Christmas Reunion’ will take place on Thursday, December 5 at Lismore City Hall.

Major cast members are returning for the special event, including Bridie Carter, Lisa Chappell, Aaron Jeffery, Myles Pollard, Zoe Naylor and Simmone.

The actors will be live on stage for fans to hear personal anecdotes and stories from the Drovers Run family, participate in a Q&A session, and view and discuss their favourite scenes.
