MCDONALD’S has announced it will slash its prices on a selection of classic menu items from TOMORROW thanks to a government VAT cut.
Fast food lovers will be able to get their hands on a Big Mac or Happy Meal at a cheaper price after Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s decision last week to slash VAT from 20 per cent to 5 per cent.

McDonald’s has announced that it has recommended that franchisees reduce prices on classics like the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with Cheese and six Chicken McNuggets.
This includes a a 40p reduction on Extra Value Meals, 30p for every Happy Meal, and 50p on breakfast meals.
It’s the first time that McDonald’s has cut back prices across its menu – and it means a big mac meal now costs the same as 2015.
The roll back on prices only applies to takeaway and drive thru orders – not McDelivery.
The newly reduced menu items will be available from 5am tomorrow for meals purchased through the Drive Thru or in restaurants for takeaway or dine-in (when reopen).
In addition to food prices, the McCafe range is also set to reduce prices, offering black and white coffee for 99p and premium coffees such as cappuccino and latte for £1.49.
However, it is also worth noting that franchisees can set their own prices – so customers are encouraged to check when they visit or use the My McDonald’s app for the prices at their local branch.
And the price cuts also won’t be applied across the board, with some items remaining the same price, including desserts and cold drinks.
McDonalds menu items being cut in price
McDonalds has said it will reduce prices for fan favourites.
Here’s some of the price changes recommended by the chain, which will be in place from 5am tomorrow.
- A 50p reduction on breakfast meals.
- 30p off the price of single McMuffins.
- Black and white coffee for 99p, instead of £1.39.
- Premium coffees such as cappuccino and latte for £1.49 instead of £1.79.
- 20p off McNuggets, the Big Mac, the Quarter Pounder with Cheese.
- 20p off other burgers such as the Filet O’Fish, McChicken sandwich and Veggie Deluxe.
- A 40p reduction on Extra Value Meals.
- 30p reduced for every Happy Meal.
Single portions of fries, the McNugget share box and cheese sides will also not be part of the price reduction.
The tax cut is due to last until January 2021 – though the price slash won’t apply to McDelivery.
Other chains are also set to slash their prices after the Chancellor’s VAT cut.
Wetherspoons will cut food and drink prices by up to 28 per cent this week.
KFC, meanwhile, is cutting the price of its boneless bucket tomorrow from £10 to £5.
It comes as the chain gears up to open to dine-in customers for the first time since March, with four restaurants opened across the UK and Ireland to test dine-in.
McDonald’s say that up to 70 per cent of capacity has been removed to insure social distancing in its restaurants.
As part of the trial, the chain will open with table service only but customers will be able to order at the kiosk, till or table with the My McDonald’s App.
The restaurant still hasn’t reopened seating areas in branches – but when it does the price cut will apply for customers who take a seat to eat their meal.

“I am very grateful for the support from our franchisees, who balance the needs of their local businesses with that principle of returning their employees back to work and customer support; many of them have faced challenges while we were closed, and are working hard to recover their businesses.”
