McDonald’s to remove plastic lids from McFlurrys – saving 383 metric tons of plastic annually

According to SAS, every day around eight million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans.

While individually we can make small changes to our everyday lifestyle, like using eco-friendly menstrual products and paper straws , global corporations also need to step up and consider their impact on the environment.

Which is why McDonald’s has just announced they are making a move to more sustainable packaging for products across its range.

The most notable change is that the fast food chain will be removing plastic from its McFlurry packaging, swapping the plastic lid for a sustainable option which will remove 383 metric tons (383,000 kilograms) of plastic annually.

Additionally, McDonald’s is removing all single-use plastic from its salad ranges, with all main meals and side salads now being served in 100 per cent sustainable and renewable cardboard containers, removing the existing plastic bowl, shaker salad cups and lids.

This swap will result in 102 metric tons (102,000 kilograms) of plastic being removed from its packaging annually.

This is the latest move from the fast food giant to veer towards a greener footprint, and it might not be long before it offers paper straws, wooden cutlery and drink cups without a plastic coating – three options it is currently trialling in Canada.

Rob Dick, supply chain officer at McDonald’s Canada said in a statement: “As one of the largest restaurant chains, we have the responsibility to take action on these important social and environmental challenges.”

McDonald’s has also added a bacon roll to its permanent range (McDonald’s)

News of McDonald’s new McFlurry packaging coincides with the announcement that the company is bringing back its Smarties McFlurry – adding the fan favourite to its permanent range. It has also announced a new bacon roll will be added to its breakfast menu, and a new chicken salad and wrap – ‘The Hot Cajun Chicken One’ – will also be added to its permanent range.

These new products will be available in McDonald stores across the UK from June 26.
