Mayans MC season 3 confirmed by FX

Mayans MC season 3 is officially a go at FX, set to arrive in fall 2020!

FX’s third season renewal of Mayans MC – a spinoff of 2008-2014’s Sons of Anarchy – arrives in the aftermath of the headline-making hullabaloo of behind-the-scenes tension that culminated in the firing of the maestro of the motorcycle gang mythology, Kurt Sutter, from his position as showrunner for what the now-contrite co-creator called “being an abrasive dick.” However, the show will go on, likely in the same spirit, since the network subsequently promoted Sutter’s spinoff collaborator in co-creator/executive producer Elgin James to showrunner, now set to tackle Mayans MC season 3.

As Nick Grad, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment, expresses in a statement:

“We’re happy to continue telling the story of Mayans M.C. with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner. Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make Mayans M.C. with this incredible cast, crew and creative team.”

Indeed, Elgin James’s ascent to Mayans MC showrunner is a remarkable narrative to have emerged amongst the entire show shake-up story. James, a relative unknown, was brought into the project to work alongside a superstar of a creative force in Sutter, having just worked on the screenplay to the topically-pertinent 2016 crime drama, Lowriders, which, directed by Ricardo de Montreuil, showcased a family-centric story set amongst East Los Angeles car culture. This came after his only other major credit, a 2011 L.A.-set drama called Little Birds, which James wrote and directed. However, James would end up getting behind the camera again for the tenth episode of Mayans MC’s first season.

Regardless, Mayans MC will keep its engines revving under James, continuing the story of club prospect Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (JD Pardo) in the California/Mexico border, attempting to ease old tensions with brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas) while investigating the circumstances behind the mysterious death of his mother; events that unfold as their father, Felipe (Edward James Olmos) tries to lead his sons away from their criminal primrose path towards a more righteous way. The cast also consists of Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Sarah Bolger, Antonio Jaramillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Emilio Rivera, Richard Cabral and Danny Pino.

As President Bert Salke, Fox 21 TVS President, adds in the statement:

“Keeping this vibrant series strong is a huge priority to everyone at Fox 21 Television Studios, FX Productions and of course FX, which has been a spectacular home and platform for both Mayans M.C. and Sons before it.”
