Maurizio Sarri should be ’embarrassed’ by Callum Hudson-Odoi’s exploits for England, according to former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton.

The teenager featured in both of the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 qualifiers during the international break, making his first start in Monday’s 5-1 win over Montenegro during which he created a goal for his club colleague Ross Barkley.

Despite Chelsea’s recent inconsistent form, Sarri has been unwilling to start the 18-year-old in the Premier League, restricting him to just six substitute appearances.

Sarri’s lack of faith has contributed to the ongoing stalemate concerning Hudson-Odoi’s contract negotiations. Chelsea are intent on keeping hold of one of their prize assets and turned down several bids from Bayern Munich in January.

Hudson-Odoi’s current deal expires in just over a year’s time and he has begun to attract interest from a number of Chelsea’s Premier League rivals, including Liverpool and Manchester United, while Borussia Dortmund are said to view him as a potential replacement for Jadon Sancho who represents one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s primary targets.

Regardless of his precarious contractual situation, however, Sutton believes Hudson-Odoi should be getting more opportunities to impress.

‘Chelsea may have turned down Bayern Munich’s offer in January but I don’t think we’ve heard the last of that,’ he told the Daily Mail.

‘Hudson-Odoi just wants to play. It is embarrassing for Chelsea that he can put on that kind of performance on the international stage without having started a game for his club.’
