Mauricio Pochettino's former Tottenham forward gives verdict on Man Utd job

Andros Townsend has backed Mauricio Pochettino for the Manchester United job, claiming he fits perfectly with the ethos at Old Trafford.

The former Tottenham boss has emerged as a potential replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with suggestions United chiefs have already sounded him out.

Solskjaer helped to ease some of the pressure surrounding his position with Saturday’s 3-1 win over Everton.

That win came after successive defeats, including against Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League.

Reports had claimed the Norwegian could have been sacked with defeat on Merseyside, but his side came from behind to win all three points.

Townsend played under the Argentinian during his time at Spurs and despite being a fan of Solskjaer, believes United risk missing out on a “world class manager”.

“I do think the United job would be perfect for him in the sense of the youngsters they have coming through,” he told talkSPORT.

“They continually bring youngsters through the academy. He’d be perfect to nurture them and make them into world-class players like he has done before at Spurs.

“But Ole’s done a good job; he steadied the ship when he came in. He is a disciple of Sir Alex Ferguson and he’s building for the future as well, so it’s a tough one.

“Yes, Ole is doing well, but do you want to miss out on a world class manager like Pochettino?”

Asked about the specific qualities of his old manager, Townsend pointed to his ability to pluck players from the academy and develop them into top-class stars.

He added. “He was incredible. He loves improving players, especially young players.

“He loves finding little gems in the academy and reserves and making them into household names.

“You’ve seen that with the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli and the players he brought through at Spurs.

“He’s an incredible manager. Any big club in the world would be lucky to have him.”
